The Fiio R9 is the flagship expression of FiiO's all in one desktop concept: dual ESS ES9038PRO DACs, eight channels of THX AAA 788+ amplification, and a 6 inch bezel free Android touchscreen in a sculpted two tone chassis. It streams, decodes, drives the hardest headphones, preamps into a speaker system, and even anchors a TV setup through HDMI ARC.

Type and Technology

The dual ES9038PRO DACs run fully differential into an eight channel THX AAA 788+ amplifier delivering up to 7300mW per channel balanced at 32 ohms. A 16 core XMOS XU316 handles USB decoding up to 768kHz/32 bit and native DSD512, and ten work modes cover Android, Pure Music, USB DAC, Bluetooth receive, AirPlay, coaxial, optical, HDMI IN, HDMI ARC, and Roon Ready operation. The Snapdragon platform ships with Android 10 and Google Play, with an Android 12 upgrade available from FiiO.

Sound Character

The R9 is highly transparent and resolving, with crystalline clarity, wide dynamic range, and headroom that feels endless even with planar and high impedance headphones. Tonality is essentially neutral, neither warm nor clinical, with a slight sense of low end presence, and the THX modules pass the DAC stage's character through unchanged.

Build and Features

Headphone outputs include 6.35mm single ended, 4.4mm balanced, and 4 pin XLR; line outputs cover RCA (2.4Vrms) and XLR3 balanced (4.8Vrms) with a preamp mode. Digital connectivity spans USB C 3.0, USB A for drives, coaxial, optical, HDMI IN, HDMI ARC, HDMI OUT, Ethernet, dual band WiFi, and Bluetooth with aptX Adaptive reception. Power comes from an internal AC supply or an external 15V DC input, with a ground lift switch for stubborn hum. An L shaped RGB light strip and illuminated knob rings signal format and sample rate, a Bluetooth remote is included, and the chassis weighs about 2.27kg.
