The Chord Electronics Hugo 2 is a portable and desktop DAC and headphone amplifier that brought the FPGA-based WTA filtering of the flagship Hugo to a smaller, battery-powered chassis, and became a What Hi-Fi? Product of the Year 2017 in the process. Made in the UK.

Type and Technology

Portable and desktop DAC and headphone amplifier, Class A solid-state. Xilinx Artix 7 FPGA with 49,152-tap 10-element Pulse Array WTA filter. PCM up to 768kHz/32-bit and DSD64 to DSD512 native. Four user-selectable digital filters. Three-stage digital crossfeed for headphone listening. Bluetooth with aptX. Inputs: Micro USB (up to 768kHz), 3.5mm coaxial/dual-data (up to 768kHz), optical (up to 96kHz). Outputs: 6.35mm and 3.5mm headphone jacks, stereo RCA line outputs. Battery: 8 hours playback. Remote control included. Made in the UK.

Modular Expansion

The Hugo 2 becomes a desktop streaming hub when paired with the Chord 2go wireless module, adding Roon Ready streaming, Tidal, Qobuz, AirPlay, and up to 4TB of Micro SD storage. The Chord 2yu adds digital outputs so the Hugo 2 can serve as a streaming transport for an external DAC. Both dock directly to the Hugo 2 without cables.

Upgrade Path

The Hugo 2's dual BNC inputs accept the Chord Hugo M Scaler at 768kHz, the single most impactful upgrade for any Hugo 2 owner, delivering a dramatic improvement in spatial resolution and naturalness from standard CD-resolution files. The Hugo 2 can also dock with the Chord Suzi power amplifier to create a complete integrated streaming system.

Sound Character

Wide, spacious, and remarkably transparent for a portable device. The 49,152-tap filter delivers accurate timing and three-dimensional staging. Four filter options allow customization from neutral and incisive to warm and smooth character.

Build and Finish

Precision-machined aluminium with polycarbonate buttons and glass viewing portal. Available in Silver or Satin Black.
