The SON is Wolf Von Langa's field coil reference loudspeaker, a compact floorstander that consistently surprises listeners who expect its modest footprint to limit its sound. The field coil driver at its core is a technology that predates the permanent magnet loudspeaker and, in the hands of a builder who knows how to use it, produces a directness and energy transfer that modern designs rarely match.

Type and Technology

Three-way floorstanding loudspeaker using FC-HRP technology: a field coil current-controlled woofer operating on the Helmholtz Resonator Principle, paired with a magnetostatic dipole surface radiator for high frequencies. The field coil woofer uses an energized electromagnet rather than a permanent magnet, allowing the magnetic field strength to be tuned and controlled for optimal performance. The tweeter module is asymmetric and resonance-decoupled, with adjustable base width and time alignment. High-density fibreboard housing with double-sided PMMA coating. Bi-wire and bi-amp capable via WBT NextGen PlasmaProtect pure copper terminals.

Sound Character

The SON fills a room rather than pointing at a listening position, music emanates from it with a presence and dynamic ease that is characteristic of high-efficiency field coil designs. Transient response is fast and natural, the midrange has a directness and tonal accuracy that stands apart from most loudspeakers at any price, and the low-frequency foundation is extended and controlled. At 94dB efficiency, it works beautifully with low-powered amplifiers including single-ended tube designs.

Build and Finish

High-density fibreboard with double-sided PMMA coating for internal damping and acoustic inertness. Modular design separates the high-frequency and low/mid-frequency modules. Pure copper air inductors and high-speed low-loss film capacitors in the crossover network. Available in Black, White, and Wild Oak finishes.
