SW1X DAC III
The SW1X DAC III is built around the legendary Philips TDA1541, the chip that audiophiles have been describing as "the most analogue-sounding DAC ever made" for four decades, in a NOS design that adds an asynchronous valve clock for the TDA1541's Dynamic Element Matching circuit, a further refinement that elevates the chip's already exceptional performance to a new level of organic, three-dimensional presentation.
Type and Technology
Non-oversampling (NOS) R2R DAC with valve output stage and valve-clocked DEM. TDA1541 R2R DAC chip, the most analogue-sounding R2R converter ever made. Asynchronous E180F valve clock powers the TDA1541's Dynamic Element Matching (DEM) circuit, with EAA91 valve-rectified power supply for the clock stage. Active I/V conversion via a single specially selected transistor directly connected to the tube grid for the shortest possible signal path. Class A, anode follower, zero negative feedback, single-ended RC valve amplification topology. 6N6P or 5687 double triode output stage. Valve-rectified CLC choke-filtered power supply. Three EI core mains transformers for separate digital and analogue supplies. S/PDIF coaxial input up to 24-bit/96kHz (USB optional). Available in STD/SPX and Balanced versions.
Sound Character
The TDA1541 takes the organic, musical character of the SW1X DAC line to a different level, the chip's depth of soundstage, timbral accuracy, and natural dynamic envelope give recordings a sense of physical presence that few digital sources approach. The valve DEM clock eliminates the digital artifacts that arise from the TDA1541's clocking circuit, producing a presentation that is frequently described as indistinguishable from analogue playback with a well-matched digital transport.
Build and Finish
Available in STD (340 x 400mm, 13.6kg) and a larger Custom version with USB module (440 x 400mm, 15.6kg). Optional upgrades include AN copper foil in oil capacitors, Black Gate decoupling capacitors for TDA1541, premium vintage tube options including TDA1541R selected and TDA1541A S1/S2 crown versions.
Best For
Serious digital listeners who want the TDA1541's legendary analogue character in a properly implemented valve output stage, with the unique addition of a valve-clocked DEM circuit for the most faithful realization of the chip's capabilities.
