SW1X DAC II Balanced

Sale price$10,825.00

The SW1X DAC II Balanced takes the PCM56-based DAC II platform to its highest expression by adding an EL84 power tube output stage coupled through signal output transformers, delivering true balanced XLR and single-ended RCA outputs simultaneously, and a substantial step up in transparency and spatial presentation over the STD and SPX versions.

Type and Technology

Non-oversampling (NOS) R2R DAC with transformer-coupled balanced valve output stage. Dual PCM56 R2R DAC chips. EL84 power tubes in triode connection, zero negative feedback, Class A, valve output stage, driven by 6N6P or 5687 double triode. SW1X copper-wound Super HiB DC core signal output transformers providing simultaneous balanced XLR and single-ended RCA outputs. Directly heated 5U4GYB/5R4GYB valve-rectified CLC choke-filtered B+ supply. Discrete transistor shunt regulated LV supplies. AN copper foil in oil interstage signal decoupling capacitors. S/PDIF digital input up to 24-bit/96kHz. Available in Balanced, Balanced Classic, and Balanced Signature versions with progressive transformer quality upgrades.

Sound Character

The addition of the EL84 output stage and output transformers introduces a level of transparency and three-dimensionality that the direct-output SPX version cannot match, the signal output transformer removes the output stage from direct contact with the load, allowing a purer coupling between the valve and the downstream component. True balanced output provides improved channel separation and noise rejection. The result is a DAC that sits at the boundary between analogue and digital in its character.

Build and Finish

Substantially larger than the DAC II at 150 x 450 x 410mm and 17kg, reflecting the more extensive transformer and power supply complement. Optional upgrades include hardwired Bakelite board output stage, fine silver wiring, Black Gate VK B+ capacitors, SW1X silver-wound signal output transformers, and Super HiB double C-core mains transformers.

Best For

Listeners who want the DAC II's PCM56 character with balanced outputs for a fully balanced system, and those who want to explore the additional transparency that transformer-coupled valve output stages provide over direct-coupled designs.
