Raal 1995 Magna (R² dual true-ribbon driver)

The Raal 1995 Magna is an open-back true-ribbon headphone with a dual-ribbon R2 driver configuration: two corrugated pure aluminum ribbons with Viscodamp "Silent Metal" viscosity dampening, totaling 16.8cm² of combined surface area and delivering an immediacy, speed, and tonal accuracy that conventional driver technologies cannot replicate. Currently available as a rolling pre-order.

Type and Technology

Open-back true-ribbon headphone. Dual complementary-tuned true-ribbon configuration (R2); two corrugated pure aluminum ribbons per earcup with Viscodamp "Silent Metal" viscosity dampening for controlled, accurate ribbon motion. Combined ribbon surface area of 16.8cm². Maximum SPL of 115dB with excursion up to 4mm. Ultra-low impedance ribbon load of 0.038 ohms, requires a Ribbon Current-Drive Interface (RCDI-32 or RCDI-8) to convert the headphone's near-zero impedance to a usable 32 or 8 ohm load for conventional amplifiers, or use with compatible direct-drive amplifiers. Standard 3.5mm TRRS input connectors for compatibility with a range of high-end cables. Fiberglass-aluminum composite housing with hard-waxed American walnut veneer and anodized finish. Three-phase etched stainless steel rear grille. Titanium aluminum nitride coated brushed stainless steel headspring. Headband with suede underside and five-position width adjustment. Memory foam, lamb suede, and perforated leather ear pads.

Sound Character

Ribbons have a fundamental advantage over conventional diaphragms in mass-to-force ratio. The Magna's aluminum ribbons are among the lightest and fastest transducers used in any headphone, resulting in a presentation of extraordinary temporal accuracy, micro-detail, and natural tonal character. Timbre, scale, and proportionality for mid-size and smaller ensembles (string quartets, piano trios, jazz, and acoustic music) are reproduced with a directness and presence that few headphones approach.

Build and Finish

530g (without cable). Fiberglass-aluminum composite body with American walnut veneer, hard-waxed and anodized. Three-phase etched stainless steel rear grille. Waterproof carry case included with all packages.

Please note: The Ribbon Current-Drive Interface (RCDI) converts the headphone and cable's near-zero impedance to 32 or 8 ohms for use with conventional amplifiers.
