Aune built its reputation from the bottom of the market upward. The AR5000 became a common answer to the question of what $350 actually buys, and the SR7000 and AC55 extended that credibility into closed-back and clip-on formats. The AR9000 now tops the Air Reference Series — the line that made Aune a serious name in open-backs — and it is not a scaled-up AR5000. Driver, diaphragm, magnet system, and chassis are all new. It arrived at Vienna High-End 2026 to unusually positive press for a debut flagship.

Type & Technology

Full-size open-back dynamic, over-ear, built around a 50mm driver with what Aune calls the Omni-Stack Carbon Diaphragm. The construction detail is the interesting part: continuous long carbon fibers laid at set angles with no cross-weave, then zone-specific heat treatment to tune damping differently across the diaphragm's surface. Both choices target the same problem — breakup modes in a large driver — and unlike most diaphragm marketing, they describe an actual manufacturing process rather than a material buzzword.

Behind that sits a patented Constant-Flux magnetic circuit, designed to hold drive force consistent across the full 4mm of linear travel, paired with a high-damping asymmetrical suspension using radial stiffeners to keep cone motion piston-straight at that stroke. A patented multi-modal absorption and diffusion structure routes rear-wave energy through shaped cavities rather than letting it reflect back through the driver. Aune's Tilted Acoustic Matrix angles each driver toward the ear rather than firing straight down the canal — the same principle as the AR5000's large-tilt-angle layout, refined. The 4mm excursion figure is the number worth watching here: it is the mechanism behind the bass weight everyone who has heard it mentions first.

The chassis is an all-metal headband assembly with a floating frame and honeycomb grille, with highly breathable mesh in both front and rear chambers plus breathable earpads. At approximately 430g it is meaningfully heavier than the 350g AR5000 — the cost of the metal build — but a wide suspension headband spreads that load across the top of the head rather than concentrating it. Hi-Res Audio certified, with rated distortion under 0.03% at 1kHz.

Sound Character

Coverage out of Vienna High-End 2026 positioned the AR9000 as a punchier alternative to the Sennheiser HD 800 S, with the 1–2kHz region filled in well enough to give it a more tonally complete midrange foundation. The trade-off noted was a more intimate, more focused presentation than the HD 800 S's famously diffuse, panoramic stage. On-head sweeps found ear gain around 3.5kHz running slightly low with the rest of the response coherent; fixture measurements show a peak near 6kHz, though listeners disagreed on whether that read as treble hardness or as elevation closer to 8kHz instead. The summary verdict was that it was one of the most conventionally correct-sounding headphones at the show.

Read alongside the AC55 and the AR5000 retune, the AR9000 looks like part of a deliberate house voicing: strong, well-controlled bass in an open-back, rather than the lean-and-airy approach its obvious competitor takes. Balanced rather than boosted — the low end has reach and physicality without the midrange paying for it.

Best For

Listeners who want HD 800 S-class tonal balance with more weight and slam behind it, and who would rather have a filled-in midrange than maximum stage width. Jazz, orchestral, and electronic material all benefit from the dynamic headroom. There is also a real practical gap worth knowing: at 43 ohms the AR9000 is far easier to drive than the 300-ohm HD 800 S, and the four included plug options let one cable move between a dongle, a desktop rig, and a balanced amplifier without buying anything else.

A natural step up for AR5000 MK2 and SR7000 owners who like Aune's tuning direction and want it executed without price-tier compromises. Less suited to anyone whose first priority is the widest possible soundstage, who wants a warm and forgiving bass-forward signature, or who is sensitive to weight — 430g is real. As with any open-back, it isolates nothing and leaks freely, so it belongs in a quiet room rather than an office.
