Astell&Kern PD20

The Astell&Kern PD20 is a reference digital audio player built around a single idea: music shaped to the way you actually hear. Developed with audio-personalization specialist Audiodo, its Personal Sound feature runs a short per-ear hearing test and builds a profile unique to you, then lets you refine it by hand, all on top of a genuine ESS quad-DAC and a multi-mode analog amplifier.

Type and Technology

A quad-DAC design built on four ESS ES9027PRO converters operating independently to minimize inter-channel interference and deliver precise separation. It decodes PCM up to 32-bit/768kHz and native DSD512. The headline feature is Audiodo Personal Sound, a first for a DAP: a simple hearing test maps each ear independently and applies a custom correction, with dedicated measurement earphones included for an accurate result.

Sound Character

Beyond the personalized profile, the PD20 puts tuning in your hands. A Triple AMP architecture offers Class A for rich, dense, analog-like texture, Class AB for balance and efficiency, and Hybrid for the best of both, switched by a physical slide key. In Class A and Hybrid modes the amplifier current adjusts across High, Mid, and Low for finer control of drive and density. The Sound Master Wheel then fine-tunes bass, mid, and treble across 160 steps purely by feel, working on top of the corrected Audiodo foundation.

Build and Finish

Machined from aluminum in a Sound Lab Control design, the PD20 places two wheels on the top deck, one for sound tuning and one for volume, with AMP and current slide switches and top-mounted LED indicators so you can read the current mode at a glance. A 6-inch Full HD display, 3.5 mm single-ended and 4.4 mm balanced outputs, and roughly 14 hours of battery with USB-C PD 3.0 fast charging round out the package. Bluetooth adds LDAC, aptX HD, and LHDC, and BT Sink lets the PD20 act as a wireless DAC.
