The Fostex TH1000RPmk2 is a closed-back flagship planar magnetic headphone representing 50 years of Fostex RP driver development, combining a newly enlarged, redesigned planar diaphragm with a solid hard maple wood housing finished by hand with Awa Aizome indigo dyeing, one of Japan's most revered traditional craft techniques. Every housing is individually dyed over multiple days, resulting in a unique deep blue hue that reveals the wood's natural grain.

Newly developed large-format RP planar diaphragm, significantly larger than the conventional T50RPmk3/mk4 driver, with redesigned printed coil pattern and increased magnet count to optimize magnetic flux distribution. Eliminates diaphragm resonance while simultaneously achieving high sensitivity, smooth frequency response, and excellent transient characteristics. Lightweight magnesium alloy mechanical parts including housing base plate and hanger, 20% lighter than aluminum with rubber packing in the rotation mechanism for vibration damping. Newly shaped asymmetric ear pads in silk protein synthetic leather with low-resilience cushions. Natural sheepskin head pad and headband. 7N grade high-purity OFC internal wiring. Detachable 2-pin rhodium-plated connector on the headphone body. Included 2m unbalanced cable; optional 4.4mm balanced cable available separately.

Build and Finish

The TH1000RPmk2's solid hard maple housing is dyed with Awa Aizome from Tokushima Prefecture, a traditional Japanese indigo dye made exclusively from the natural tade indigo plant. Each housing is hand-dyed over multiple days by skilled craftspersons, with a curing period between applications. Changes in temperature, humidity, and the wood's own grain produce a one-of-a-kind indigo pattern on every unit. The result is a headphone that carries a direct connection to Japanese craft heritage in every pair.
